Cycle Lane? Update.

In August the Westmeath Co. Co. said that they will be upgrading the footpaths and upgrading the cycle lane from Lakepoint to the greenway at the Dublin bridge.

Now the council put in a new footpath at st. Coleman’s school and nothing more.

The Lakepoint Residents Association have asked the council through the voice of Cllr. Aoife Davitt to ask why the council have not upgraded the cycle lane at all as stated by them.

As it stands there was or is (were not sure as the lines are nearly worn away in most places) a cycle way marked the whole way from the junction of The Drive and The Green to St. Coleman’s School. This cycle way has not been maintained by the council. With Lakepoint being the biggest catchment area for the school you would thing this well well used cycle way be maintained for safety of our school children.

The cycle way returning on the St. Lomans side of the road is rarely used as it is on road and then there is no safe crossing for children or adults alike near lakepoint. A safe crossing has been asked for by the residents association but the council said there are no plans for such.

This communication is to keep you up to date and let you know that we are canvassing for constant improvement in lakepoint.

  1. Thank you for the update. May I suggest that you ask all residents of Lakepoint to contact local councillors to push this specific agenda.

    • Hi thanks for your message. Questions are being asked and the issue is current and on the table so I’d hope it will happen without a full call to arms so to speak. The channels that be can be very slow in matters like this where it looks like nothing is happening so we wait and see.
The association did get the council to remark the roundabouts etc last year and it is the councils job to upkeep the cycle way also so we will keep the pressure and requests on.
      Regards.

      • Hi, it turns out the council have now said that the job is complete and that they intend to do no maintenance to their cycle lane. Which they received money to do but spent it on traffic calming and footpaths for st. Colmans School.
Rest assured we will press on until this item is resolved. I just thought I would update you. We have got the item brought up at the Mullingar municipal meeting where they did not give even entertain the idea.
        We will persevere.
